The Answers

Can I submit a review on an anime/manga that has already been reviewed?

Of course. We have more than one Ah! My Goddess review, for example. Just make sure you're contributing something and not just repeating what other reviewers have said. As a rule, if you've seen something that hasn't been reviewed yet, consider writing a review for it, instead, while you're in a reviewing mood.

What happened to the old reviews and commentaries?

They are here. I already emailed all of the reviewers, asking them to rewrite their reviews with the new format. They have the link to their old reviews, but that doesn't mean they're going to stay around forever. It might not be until late next year, but they'll be deleted eventually. That means the commentaries, too.

So no more commentaries?

No, but Alex is helping me set up a star system so you can rate the anime according to your personal opinion and its level of offensiveness. Since the commentaries were used by people to either bash or praise the anime, I decided that an automated star system would be easier to deal with. This probably won't be put up for a while, though, since we both have to find about 7 hours where we can sit down and tinker with it.

Any tips for reviewing?

When I know I'm going to sit down and watch a new anime, I take a pen and paper with me and jot down notes. I discuss it with my husband when we're finished and let him read my review. He usually knows if I forgot something, because he watched it with me.

This is also helpful because you don't always remember if there's any cursing or how bad that one boob-shot was, and you often have thoughts about the characters (ie, how my favorite Read or Die character kept changing, or that quote I wanted to put in about Nenene) that you might not remember later. It also helps you focus on a few points to write your review later and makes the writing process go more quickly.

Do I absolutely HAVE to see both the sub and dub?

No. You can just read up on what you haven't seen. BUT I expect you to really know your stuff on what you have seen and would like for you to have read something about what you haven't seen. If there are no good sources for what you haven't seen, just go with what you have. That will be fine.

Your requirements are too hard.

The idea of the requirements is to make sure that people who review for me know what they're talking about and aren't just reviewing something they saw five years ago and think that they remember. I can be pretty flexible -- as long as your review is accurate, somewhat thorough, and even marginally helpful, I'll be happy. Especially if you review something that hasn't been reviewed yet.

What if I've just seen part of an anime but feel like I can make an intelligent review?

If you've seen it very recently and are willing to research a little to fill in any gaps in your understanding (make sure no one pops out of their top in the last episode, that sort of thing), I don't see why not. I've only watched the first episode of Cowboy Bebop, but I've talked about it so much with my husband and brother that I feel qualified to begin a review right now. Of course, I'm not going to post it until I finish the series, but I have most of my notes already laid out.

You keep talking about "research," but I don't really know where to go.

Fan sites are great places to learn about the anime you're reviewing, especially if you haven't seen it recently and need some refreshing. There are also other review sites -- though I don't encourage using other people's reviews (that's bad), they've helped me double-check my facts several times. You can find most of them at Anipike. If you want more specific links, here is the reviews page and here are the fan pages by title.

Can I submit a non-anime review?

Preferably not.

You don't have what I want. Where can I find it?

I like Anime World. It's got a pretty thorough selection and links to other review sites.

I wanted a review for Teen Titans/He-Man/Totally Spies/Kids Next Door/Etc. Why don't you have them reviewed or in the Requests?

Your request was not anime or manga. In essence, it didn't fit with the purpose of this site. Teen Titans and Totally Spies, for example, are American shows that have utilized an anime style because it's so popular. American shows are usually much more sharply divided than Japanese in terms of catagorizing by viewer age. Take Teen Titans versus Family Guy (or South Park) -- the first is expressly for young viewers (kids to teenagers), while the latter is only for adults (it has lots of adult jokes). American animation is pretty straight-forward; it's easy to tell the target age group. It's not so for Japanese animation, which is why we need reviews for it more than for American shows.

I buy alot of anime. Will that damage my relationship with God?

You should know your reasons for buying anime, whether it's either a hobby or an obsession, and pay attention to whether it's influencing your behavior. Once you know those things, ask yourself whether it is actually taking time away from your relationship with God and making God less in your eyes. Sometimes a hobby can make God less essential in our lives, and you should always try to admit when you need to take time away from your anime to spend more time with Him.

If this is a matter of whether violence, sexuality, and language will corrupt you, that's not just a matter to be discussed about anime, but also about American movies and tv as well. It is also a central issue in the debate about censorship.

The best advice I can give you is that if you think anime is hurting your relationship with God, stop watching it. It's not worth putting yourself in spiritual danger over. If you're feeling guilty -- or someone else is telling you that you should feel guilty -- for watching shows with violence, sexuality, and language, then limit yourself to the cleaner shows and feel better. For example, I avoid any anime with lower male nudity. I can handle upper female nudity, since I'm a girl, and my husband isn't an immature brat (even though I sometimes cover his eyes to make me feel better). But even though we enjoy anime, we know that it comes from a culture with different social standards and moral values, and we take it thus. To enjoy it, sometimes you just have to accept that you don't like parts of it. A Christian does not have to compromise morality to be entertained, but a Christian who feels as if their morality is being compromised should always take appropriate steps.

Why are some of the reviews linked and some not?

The non-linked reviews are ones that I have either not posted yet or not written yet. Reviews by others are not posted. It's a sort of reminder system for myself.
